Portrait Painters Hunter is a sub group of Society of Artists Newcastle
Our members meet every Monday morning at the Society’s rooms in Lambton Newcastle from 9.30am until about 12.30/1.00pm.  Drawing and painting the face is the primary focus of this session along with sharing ideas and enjoying each other’s company.
Every two weeks we have a model who sits for us for a 3 hour session. The model is often one of the group’s family members, friend or acquaintance. The longer session allows the painters in our group to work on one piece and complete a portrait. ​
Every other week we encourage drawing a number of quicker poses of 15 minutes and we use the group members as models. All mediums are used and many artistic styles are evident.
A successful exhibition has been held in March in the last two years to coincide with the Archibald Portrait Prize. Some of our members have entered works in the Archibald Prize and these paintings are exhibited with the group’s portraits.
Our participants come from Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Upper Hunter, Port Stephens and the Central Coast.

​EXHIBITION DATE:   WEEKEND 16th & 17th MARCH 2024
VENUE:  Society of Artists Bldg ( incorporating RJ Donkin Gallery )
 
EXHIBITION DETAILS:  The display can be made up of 3 sections  -  
  • 1.    PORTRAIT OF YOUR ‘FRIEND’  - you find your sitter, paintings in any media, preferable a medium to large size, framed or deep-sided wrap-a-round canvas with large D-rings.  No works on paper with only a ‘matt’ as support.  Must look professional.
 
  •  2.   SELF-PORTRAIT  -  ‘From the Waist up’  -  the challenge is to think about your composition including your torso – could be leaning forward, sidewards, have a hand, have an arm, in a chair, leaning on a wall, etc.        NO ‘FACE’ ONLY
 
  • 3.    PORTRAIT OF ANOTHER ARTIST FROM CLASS  -  ‘From the Waist up’.  This is to compliment the self-portrait – will be hung together.   The ‘other artist’ will be drawn out of the hat to make it interesting.  Photos can be shot in class with the platform and lighting.
